A canary is a best-effort transparency signal. It is not cryptographic proof and may lag reality. High-risk sources should still verify the operator out of band.

An expired or missing canary might mean pressure — or simply that nobody renewed it. Always combine with
key verification.

A signature proves the statement was signed by the operator’s long-term signing key. It is still not legal proof of non-compulsion in all jurisdictions.
Limits
- Operators may be legally restricted from updating a canary honestly in some jurisdictions.
- An expired canary might mean pressure — or simply that nobody renewed it.
- Always combine with key verification and a trusted onion address.
